UX Design: Final Compilation

Stepping into the role of project leader for this module has been a journey of both creative discovery and strategic responsibility. My goal was to guide a team through the complex process of identifying a meaningful problem and developing a high-tech solution that truly serves a specific need. From the initial spark of brainstorming to the pressure of final high-stakes presentations, this project challenged me to maintain a clear vision while balancing technical limitations and user requirements. This blog documents our transition from a broad health-focused concept to a specialized Augmented Reality (AR) educational tool designed for the culinary world, highlighting the efforts, pivots, and leadership lessons learned along the way.

    Work Progress

    Weeks 1 – 4: Identifying the Pivot
    After being nominated as the group leader, I initiated our brainstorming sessions focused on healthy eating. We initially explored a general AR cooking system for home use. However, following a critical feedback session with our lecturer regarding the high cost of AR hardware versus the simplicity of home cooking, I led a strategic pivot. We decided to focus on culinary students, where the investment in AR technology aligns logically with professional education and skill development.

    Week 2 Research Phase


    Weeks 5 – 7: Diving into User Research
    To ensure our solution was grounded in reality, I divided the team into two streams to handle quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Under the guidance of our lecturer, we refined our questions to avoid bias, aiming instead to uncover the "hidden struggles" of culinary students. By Week 6, we had translated this raw data into a user persona and journey map, which directly informed our "How Might We" (HMW) brainstorming sessions.

    Weeks 8 – 9: Strategic Planning & Proposal
    Using card sorting, we filtered our ideas down to features that were both high-impact and technically feasible for our skill level. I oversaw the completion of our Design Proposal—a comprehensive document including stakeholder maps and problem statements. This week, I also delegated tasks for overall art style and visual design to Winnie and Si Yan, while Guo Ying and I started on the visual prototyping for the AR UI layout and the website layout. At the same time, we also began planning our AR feature set, specifically focusing on safety, hygiene, and technical cooking skills.

    Weeks 10 – 12: Storyboarding and Production
    I led the team in finalizing a storyboard that highlighted a student’s struggle with traditional, wordy recipes. In Week 11, we executed our video shoot, demonstrating how AR can assist with ingredient prep and professional dish presentation. Following the shoot, I edited the initial cut of the video to set directions and collaborated closely with Guo Ying on the complex task of editing the AR experience mockup animations. We passed on our finished video to Kar Yee for audio editing and final video compilation.

    Weeks 13 – 15: Pitching and Final Refinement
    Following our initial pitch presentation, I decided to utilize the remaining time to refine our features based on the judges' feedback. I led the group in enhancing our presentation slides, adding scenario mockups for "crisis management" in the kitchen, and being transparent about our technical limitations. This ensured our final submission was polished, realistic, and professionally grounded.

    My reflections

    This experience has taught me that being a leader means maintaining a clear mind, even when the pressure is on. Navigating the tight deadlines meant we occasionally had to rush to meet due dates, but it taught me the importance of decisive action.

    I’ve realized there is still a long way to go in learning how to guide a team with maximum efficiency, especially when balancing different creative opinions and technical constraints. However, I am proud of how we pivoted our direction and refined our final outcome. I am glad that through the "sweat" and the long hours, everything worked out in the end, leaving me with a much stronger foundation in project management.
