Instructions
Mr Shamsul Hamimi, my lecturer for the Collaborative Design Practice module for this April 2025 semester, gives us a heads-up on the upcoming tasks and requirements.
Work Process
Week 1
Receiving the collaboration project details with the students from the Game Studies module, we chose a board game named The Gluconomy, which is a game that represents the energy conversion from glucose to ATP. Mr Shamsul had brought the physical game to class, and our group took the chance to give the board game a try. We sure do get some of the fun out of the game, while I constantly strategize what my next move would be/financial management. (definitely not betting all my money in hope for better luck.)
However, we do notice some of the improvements that could be made to the board game. During the entire gameplay, one thing I observed is that this game took a long time to achieve victory, and we had yet to achieve a victor in the end before Mr Shamsul took his leave, and we returned the board game.
Week 2
While Winnie, as our leader for this module, distributed the task to us, I worked together with two other teammates, Guo Ying and Kar Yee, on brainstorming ideas for the game board redesigns. We're squeezing our brain juice out to come out with different board layouts that hopefully can improve the cluttered layout on the board, which we found confusing during our trial gameplay in the class.
Si Yan, Winnie, and Hui Yi, on the other hand, focus on the other game elements such as the stock market and power cards, token designs, as well as brainstorming for additional concepts that could be added to the board game to increase engagement.
Week 3
This week, the 3 of us who are in charge of deciding the game board designs started a face-to-face discussion together, brainstorming the possible layout that will also fit the science-economy concept from the original creator of the game. We are also focusing on reducing the visual clutter and improving the gameplay experience by addressing the poor token visibility as experienced during our gameplay.

Week 4
This week, we're notified about the presentation of our first task, sharing our findings from The Gluconomy game, and making empathy maps from the intended target audience of this board game, stepping into others' points of view, and understanding what they observed from The Gluconomy. Our target audience for this board game is science students, or specifically the biochemistry students, where they can have fun from the gameplay and relate about the glucose energy conversion cycle in a more visually understandable way.
Week 5
Week 5 is the week where we're preparing for the presentation to the head of the module, Dr Luqman, about our empathy maps, the problem statements, and some of the moodboards as a design direction for our prototype later on, and what we observed from the original board game with their pain points that affected gameplay experience.

My reflections
Through this first project, it acts as a first step in a design process, where we as designers will need to empathize with others, understand their perspective, and play our roles in aligning the outcome that provides a more enjoyable experience to everyone, or the target audience.
